Jazz Ensemble |

Jazz Ensemble performs in concerts and festivals around the state. The group explores improvisation and music in the jazz idiom. The roots and historical perspective of jazz are presented throughout the year.

Audition video submissions will need to be emailed to Ms. Stein by 11:59pm on Friday, March 1st, 2024. Below are the resources that you will need for the audition. If you prefer to audition in person at Cedarburg High School, please email Ms. Stein to find a time to audition before/after school. Please begin all auditions at measure 116-remainder of the song (if your music starts later, please play the entirety of the page presented).
Saxes, Trumpet & Trombone
1. Scales- Prepare the two scales starred on the scale sheet.
2. Excerpts- Prepare measure 116-end of excerpt provided (or full page provided).
3. Students auditioning are encouraged, but not required, to play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over a recorded track. Click here for the youtube video link.
Piano, Guitar & Bass
1. Scales- Prepare the two scales starred on the scale sheet.
2. Excerpts- Prepare bracketed portions (full page if no brackets) of excerpt provided.
3. Students auditioning are encouraged, but not required, to play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over a recorded track. Click here for the youtube video link.
Drums
You will start with an excerpt I Mean You and play the first page. Then, for the other three audition requirements, you will play 24 measures EACH of the following styles at the appropriate tempos. Please use a metronome when practicing, and do not use a metronome when recording the audition. You are encouraged to include fills in the 24 measure grooves.
- Drum Excerpt- I Mean You: Play all of first page
- Swing- medium tempo (quarter note = 120 beats per minute)
- Latin or Samba- medium tempo (quarter = 128bpm)
- Funk- medium tempo (quarter = 96bpm)
